Parks can be a wonderful novelist. When she is on her game, as in last year's Lust for Life, she deftly combines likable characters with humorous and even touching situations. Unfortunately, while this book has a few compelling moments, they are ultimately not enough to make up for the unsympathetic and poorly developed characters that are trapped in a distasteful story. This book was surprisingly difficult to finish.

Tash and Rich are in love and eloping to a ski resort in France. They are over the moon, and it's only natural that Rich would want to share his happiness by inviting his closest friends to come along. Unfortunately, Rich's friends have hidden agendas and secrets that threaten to turn the dream wedding into a nightmare. (DOWNTOWN, Dec., 461 pp., $14.00)
