This book is part of a series and readers who have not read the previous books will be lost. The language is medieval and previous explanations from the author on the world he created would be useful. Despite the unfamiliar names and the references to pre-existing wars, the overall storyline is interesting and not that hard to follow. However, you have to wade through a lot of confusion first.

Malgwyn, a soldier in his own right, has been summoned by the king to act as a negotiator for two warring groups. On his way to negotiations, he stops to visit King Doged, an ally struggling to retain control of his kingdom. After Doged is murdered, Malgwyn changes course and seeks to avenge the slain king.
