Here's a gripping mystery that highlights some of the dark realities facing teens today. Unfortunately, the hero's overbearing attitude and unprofessional treatment of the heroine, which sometimes borders on abuse, make him difficult to empathize with.

Police Lieutenant Perry Flynn is determined to pursue a case he believes involves a sexual predator. In the past year, two high school girls have disappeared, only one of whom was found -- dead.

The FBI has its own suspicions and sends agent Kylie Donovan to investigate. Posing as a college student, Kylie meets Perry and his nieces, whom he is helping to raise. The suspicion that the perp could be a cop makes Kylie leery of Perry, while he's suspicious of her motives in befriending his nieces. It seems someone wants Perry blamed for the crimes, but Kylie begins to realize he isn't involved -- all as concern for his nieces' safety grows. (ST. MARTIN'S, Apr., 416 pp., $7.99)
