SURRENDER THE DARK
Banks is a queen of urban fantasy. Her books are rich with details and characters that stand the test of time, and this is yet another thoroughly enjoyable example of her supreme storytelling style. A story of angels, demons, love and the fate of humanity. If there’s any drawback here, it is that a reader may not agree with the abundance of social commentary woven throughout the story.
Celeste Jackson has lived a challenging and difficult life. Addicted to alcohol and cigarettes, she believes she suffers from schizophrenia. When her abusive boyfriend threatens her life she sees a demon inside him. Forced to run, Celeste ends up in a bar on the wrong side of town. There she finds Azrael. He’s almost as nutty as she is, but she feels safe with him. Azrael has been put on this earth to find Celeste. She’s a descendent of angels and holds the key to saving humanity. He strives to earn Celeste’s trust and to guide her to become the figurehead she’s meant to be. Will they be able to save humanity or will they give in to temptation and cause Azrael to lose his wings forever? (POCKET, Apr., 400 pp., $7.99)
