Book Review

THE SWAN MAIDEN
by Jules Watson

Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy

RT Rating

Watson's prose snatches the reader's full attention from the first sentence and refuses to let go until the final page. Irish myths and legends are famous for being complicated and detailed, yet the author painstakingly builds a world of druids, Irish kings and ancient heroes that's straightforward and sensible. A must- read for anyone who loves Irish folklore.

When the druid Cathbad prophesies even before her birth that Deidre will be a great beauty and a destroyer of kings, the child is raised in isolation deep inside King Conor's private hunting lands. Conor wishes to wed Deidre once she's grown, but she has other plans and escapes with the help of three of Conor's own Red Branch warriors -- an action that brings war to Conor's kingdom and changes the history of Ireland forever.
