The second book in Taylor’s Union Street Bakery series is sweet and totally satisfying. Reading the first novel would be helpful for readers to become thoroughly engaged with the plot, but the author does an excellent job of bringing things up to date without intrusive exposition. Absorbing characters, a hint of mystery and touching self-discovery elevate this novel above many others in the genre.

During the remodel of the family’s bakery, Daisy and her sisters discover a recipe box and some photos from the 1940s. As they set off to uncover the identity of the woman who must have left them, Daisy makes a shocking discovery about herself. Reeling from this unexpected news, she has to finally come to terms with her own past in order to move toward building a healthy and happy future. This includes dealing emotionally with her complex family history and her shaky relationship with her mother. (BERKLEY, Nov., 352 pp., $15.00)
