TALL DARK DEFENDER (4) by Beth Cornelison: Annie Compton found the courage to leave her abusive husband. Now she struggles to make ends meet as a waitress. When her boss asks her to deliver an envelope full of money to a dangerous part of town, one of the regulars, Jonah Devereaux, follows her. Jonah is actually doing undercover work, hoping to expose a money-laundering ring that's being run out of the diner, and when Annie is mugged, he fills her in. Annie doesn't know whom she can trust, but she and Jonah begin to lean on each other to make it through these terrifying circumstances. Cornelison handles a tough subject in a sensitive manner and creates a touching story as two damaged souls find each other and feel fortunate to be able to make a fresh start.
