As a victim of corporate downsizing and a cheating ex-husband, stockbroker Callie Smith is seriously depressed. As a lark, Callie's pal Terry Walker gets her a walk-on role on "Within Our Reach," the soap on which he stars.

Businessman Jason Kane has a reputation for salvaging sagging TV shows. As president of Trans-Global Network, he had better find a way to fix the slumping "Within Our Reach" or face cancelation. Jason is mesmerized when he catches a glimpse of Callie during her cameo. In Jason's opinion, she is just what they need to spice up the show.

Callie is dumbfounded when she is offered a starring role in the afternoon soap. She's a stockbroker, not an actress. Jason, however, is one determined man.

Callie decides to try for two factors. One, her mother's unexpected arrival in New York and second, Terry has been getting menacing letters. Someone is threatening to reveal Terry's secrets and destroy his career. The fact that the soap hunk is gay would most likely not go over well in middle America. Callie hopes to do some undercover detecting on the set. When dangerous accidents begin to plague Callie and Terry, Jason worries that the stakes have been raised.
