Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Fantasy

RT Rating

This is the second title in Haydon's fabulous series. Old and new fans will enjoy the continuing adventures of Ven Polypheme, who is a refreshingly ordinary protagonist, and his friends, each of whom is loyal and steadfast. Haydon hammers home the idea that it's not only our families that make us who we are, but our friends as well.

Ven Polypheme, royal reporter, has just lost his job -- right on the heels of the king giving him a secret mission to discover the origin of a mysterious artifact given to his father. Ven heads for that city within a city, the Gated City, populated by thieves and criminals.

Accompanied by his friends and ready for adventure, what they discover about the Gated City and about each other is a lesson for a lifetime. (Starscape, Jul., 320 pp., $17.95)
