Dodd's latest hero is like a heat-seeking missile; once he's set on a course, he's hard to shake. Making this damaged and obsessive hero likable despite his arrogance demonstrates Dodd's wonderful gift for characterization. The offbeat characters and undeniable charm of New Orleans make this romp a joy to experience!

One mistake has set the banking career of New Orleans native Nessa Dahl back years. Yet she stays at Premier Central Bank in the hopes that the powers that be will eventually promote her.

Mac MacNaught, the owner of the bank, is on the warpath. A series of bank robberies in New Orleans have him out for blood. Mac suspects Nessa is involved, so he goes there as an insurance investigator to try to prove it. But he gets caught up in the wild and wacky madness that is Mardi Gras. (Nessa and her eccentric aunts are legendary for their hospitality and parties.) Mac's obsession with Nessa is reaching a fever pitch, and mixing business with pleasure might get
them both burned! (SIGNET, Mar., 400 pp., $7.99)
