These 29 very short stories act as teasers — entertaining, but leaving you wanting more. All have some element of romance and most have surprising plot twists. You are sure to find several of your favorite authors here.

These suspense stories run the gamut from paranormal to special ops to P.I.s, with varied locations and characters. Among the highlights are William Simon’s “Spider’s Tango,” in which the U.S. president’s granddaughter is kidnapped, and “Night Heat” by Laura Griffin, which features terrorists taking hostages at the American ambassador’s home in the Philippines. Patricia Rosemoor brings a touch of the paranormal with “Hot Note,” about a singer who lures men to their death with her voice. Mariah Stewart’s Mercy Street crew help with a missing child case in “Without Mercy” while Julie Kenner brings a shocking end to “The Honeymoon.” Allison Brennan’s Lucy Kincaid can’t resist trying to help in a hostage situation while she is at the beach in “Vacation Interrupted” and Lee Child ends the collection with a bang in his super-short tale “I Heard a Romantic Story.” (MIRA, Jun., 608 pp., $24.95)
