Action and adventure sear the pages in this emotional drama that pits the forces of nature against the indomitable will of human beings. While state, federal and local authorities are drawn into the conflict as it escalates into a full-fledged war, battles among the protagonists wage as they fight personal demons.

Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne and his pregnant wife, Episcopal priest Clare Fergusson, pick the worst possible time to go on a belated honeymoon. A couple burns to death in a house fire, but the chief believes the department can handle it. Then Murphy’s Law goes into effect: The fire victims have been murdered, the most vicious ice storm to hit the area in more than a century descends and Mikayla, the victims’ foster child and a recent liver transplant recipient, is missing after the fire. Russ and Clare don’t stay oblivious to the hunt for Mikayla and her captors for long as the chase comes ever closer to their honeymoon hideaway. (MINOTAUR, Nov., 368 pp., $25.99)
