RT Rating

The always entertaining MacAlister kicks off a brand-new paranormal series featuring a race of people, Travellers, with the unusual ability to steal time from others. The Time Thief series is classic MacAlister: plenty of madcap adventures, offbeat characters and a zany heroine up to her ears in trouble.

Although orphaned at an early age, Kiya Mortenson considers herself somewhat lucky as she has survived being struck by lightning — twice. But she’s currently unemployed and stuck with a broken-down car. Kiya takes a job being a nanny to five rambunctious pugs owned by an imperious matriarch camping in the Oregon wilderness. Something about the Faa family is a bit weird, but Kiya is pretty easygoing — until a wounded man climbs into her tent after being stabbed. Peter Faa is a member of the Watch, who police the Travellers. He’s on the trail of a Traveller who not only stole time, but also someone’s life. Now Kiya is in the middle of an off-the-wall caper that reveals startling facts about her own heritage. (SIGNET, May, 352 pp., $7.99)
