Sala’s second Storm Front book has a strong premise and its fair share of harrowing moments, but perhaps dwells too much for comfort on the kidnapped child’s perspective. If you’re looking for an escapist read, this isn’t it.
Katie and J.R. Earle’s marriage hit the rocks months ago, though J.R. remains involved in son Bobby’s life. Then a tornado touches down in their small town, and Bobby is believed to be one of the casualties — until his friend Holly tells her mother that she saw a man take Bobby. An oil company troubleshooter, J.R. is trapped on an offshore rig until the weather clears, leaving Katie to shoulder her grief and horror alone. When J.R. returns, he and Katie unite in a desperate search for Bobby. (MIRA, Jul., 304 pp., $7.99)
