Gemma Dante, practicing witch and owner of the Golden Bough occult boutique, is worried she'll grow old alone. Her friend suggests she cast a love spell on herself and, lo and behold, fire fighter Sean Kennealy arrives at her door. The attraction they feel for one another is immediate, and Gemma believes she's found her soul mate.

But Sean finds it difficult to come to terms with Gemma's Wiccan beliefs, and Gemma unhappily realizes the difficulties and fears of being involved with a fire fighter. Complicating matters are the fear that Gemma's beloved grandmother may have Alzheimer's and Sean's guilt over the near death of a child in a fire.

Total Rush offers a thought-provoking look into the life of fire fighters. Though the conflicting lifestyles of the hero and heroine are handled aptly, in the end you still wonder how these two people can possibly have a future together. (Mar., 336 pp., $6.99)
