Suspense maven Gardner is known for her flawed but compelling and strong female characters. Here, she brings back former cop Tessa Leone from Love You More and introduces new heroine Libby Denbe. The plot intricacies and layers of emotional devastation in this high-stakes story are immensely riveting. It’s a truly unforgettable book!

Former cop Tessa Leone is now working as a P.I. for a company that aids big corporations. When the entire family of the owner of Denbe Construction is kidnapped, Tessa is called in to represent the corporate interests as the police and FBI begin the hunt. What was supposed to be an attempt to save their marriage ends in terror when Libby Denbe, her husband Justin and their 15-year-old daughter Ashlyn are abducted and taken to a currently unused prison that was, ironically, built by Justin’s company. Under pressure, secrets and lies come out that threaten to destroy the family. What do these dangerous and efficient kidnappers want? (DUTTON, Feb., 400 pp., $26.95)
