This debut novel is an entertaining romp, marred only in the beginning by Chance's awkward world-building. Once the story gets going, the flaws fade away and the reader is pulled into Cassie's struggle to survive an internecine conflict that has pitted various vampire factions against each other.

Clairvoyant Cassandra Palmer has a small problem: The vampire-run mafia she testified against three years ago has found her. She has no choice but to turn to the vampire governing body for help. But it comes with a price. Forced to work with the silky, seductive Mircea, Cassie finds herself heir to a set of powers that are both frightening and awe-inspiring.

A highlight of the book is Cassie and Mircea's complex relationship. They have a scene that's steamy and advances the plot -- a rare thing, indeed. Cassie's a strong and fiercely independent protagonist, and fans of this popular subgenre should definitely give this novel a chance. (Jun., 320 pp., $6.99)
