RT Rating

Fan favorite Snyder returns with her first volume in the Healer series, which will transport you into the Fifteen Realms, a land in conflict and flux. The descriptions are vivid and draw you into the rugged journey across the mountains. You’ll want to follow their voyage into the next book.

Avry of Kazan is a healer who absorbs the wounds and ailments of the sick and dying. Because the healers are accused of spreading the plague, she is hunted and threatened with death. She is captured by Kerrick and his band, who want her to heal their plague-ridden prince. Kerrick has hidden powers of his own. To get to the prince, they must traverse the Nine Mountains. Avry doesn’t want to heal the prince for two reasons, the foremost of which is she’ll die. The other is she doesn’t believe he’s on the right side. She makes friends with everyone in the group except Kerrick, who crosses her at every turn. On their journey they encounter mercenaries who want the gold coin offered for her and magical obstacles in their path. (MIRA, Jan., 400 pp., $14.95)
