Book Review

TOUCHSTONE
by Melanie Rawn

Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy

RT Rating

In this first book of the Glass Thorns series there is a lot of exposition, worldbuilding and introduction to a somewhat large cast of characters. While the book is beautifully written and the characters are interesting — especially Cayden Silversun — not a whole lot actually happens until the last third of the book.

Cayden Silversun is the son of aristocrats who would prefer that he do what he can to advance the family’s interests at court, but Cade lives for the theater and has chosen that path instead. Part fae, part elf and part wizard, Cade is a talented tregetour (a kind of playwright) and when Mieska Windthistle joins Cade’s nascent theatrical troupe, they enjoy a kind of success they’d never hoped to achieve. However, Cade is plagued by ominous dreams about Mieska and the future of Touchstone. When they start touring, they discover that a powerful member of the aristocracy is very interested in them, perhaps more than he should be. (TOR, Feb., 368 pp., $25.99)
