Brown’s latest is fast paced and hard to put down. The sociopathic antagonist adds a chilling element that maintains tension and suspense right to the end of this gripping tale. Although the reader knows the identity of the bad guy, it is a challenge to figure out how he pulls off his crimes.
When a stalker attempts to kill Berry Malone and shoots her co-worker instead, Sheriff Ski Nyland is the first to respond. Initially, Ski suspects that Berry was having an affair with the man who was shot. In response to the shooting, Berry’s mother, Caroline King, contacts private detective Dodge Hanley. Hanley is Berry’s biological father, but he hasn’t seen her since the day she was born. The story shifts back and forth between the present and the events that took place 30 years earlier, telling the story of Dodge and Caroline. (SIMON AND SCHUSTER, Aug., 400 pp., $26.99)
