TRIAL BY FIRE
Davis delivers a hot romance with plenty of action and angst, from the main characters to the secondary ones. Some of the book is told from the point of view of the villain, which makes for an entertaining and suspenseful story.
Firefighter Lt. Howard Paxton meets Kat McKenna when the home where she's housesitting is set on fire. When a body is found there, it becomes apparent that Kat may have seen the killer. The attraction between Howard and Kat is instantaneous. A second fire and murder makes it clear the perpetuator is targeting Howard, and he becomes obsessed with keeping Kat safe. To figure out who hates him so much, Howard must tap into memories he has suppressed since he was 4 years old. (Signet Eclipse, Aug., 352 pp., $6.99)
