Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum and crew are up to their eyeballs in failures-to-appear, so they decide to hire another bail-enforcement agent. Of course every nutcase in the county turns up to apply.

This, however, is just a prelude to the madness that ensues when a woman shows up brandishing a gun and claiming to be Ranger's wife. Stephanie doubts her claim, but he's incommunicado so she can't confirm. Then Ranger is accused of kidnapping his daughter, and all hell breaks loose. Someone has stolen his identity, reputation and daughter Julie. Getting her back safely means Stephanie has to play sacrificial lamb. It also means she's going to have to keep really close quarters with Ranger, which once again puts Stephanie in the middle of a sexy romantic triangle. Joe or Ranger? One day Stephanie is going to have to choose.

Poor Stephanie. Whenever it seems she's getting a handle on her life, something blows up in her face. Even though this is the 12th outing in this remarkable series, Evanovich keeps the antics of Stephanie and her wacky cohorts hilarious, fast-paced and vastly appealing. (Jul., 320 pp., $26.95)
