In TWILIGHT (3) by Kristen Heitzmann, firefighter Cal Morrison's hopes soar when Laurie Sutton returns to town. He's been struggling with a rescue that went sour and the resulting mental anguish. He hopes he and Laurie can pick up where they left off years prior. But coming home with her two children is just the beginning of Laurie's nightmare. Did she return hoping Cal would make everything right? If so, why does she keep him at arm's length? Not until her fears are realized does she finally turn to Cal for help. But in the crucial moment will Cal, scarred by post-traumatic stress, be unable to save her? Ms. Heitzmann takes a long time to tell a good story with brooding characters and lengthy internal narrative. A not-so-simple love story enhances this book. (Jul., 384 pp., $11.99)
