Although vampire Queen Betsy is as sarcastic and hilariously self-involved as always, the underlying tone of this series continues to darken into a potential horror story. It’s fascinating to see where Davidson goes with this, while keeping up the fun and wackiness. Better buckle up, things are getting really bumpy!

Still reeling from her encounter with werewolves, Betsy is not in the mood to deal with the devil, but her half-sister Laura (aka the Antichrist) needs Betsy’s moral support on her visit to hell. Betsy figures she should get something out of the trip, so she bargains with the devil to gain the ability to read the Book of the Dead without going insane. Neither Betsy nor Laura expects to suddenly be messing around with the space-time continuum! (BERKLEY, Jul., 320 pp., $24.95)
