Although vampire queen Betsy is monumentally self-absorbed, she also has a good heart — which is why she has ended up not only being queen of the vampires, but also co-ruler of Hell alongside her half-sister (who also happens to be the Antichrist). Much of the humor in these outlandish tales stems from Betsy’s self-centered and quirky worldview, but in this installment Betsy is finally forced to look beyond her self-defense mechanisms to the reality around her. The results are both touching and totally wacky!

Betsy has been stalling big time on following through on her promise to help her half sister, Antichrist Laura, run Hell. But now that Jessica’s babies have been born, puppies Furr and Burr are nearly housebroken and BabyJon is doing well, Betsy is out of excuses. So she reluctantly returns to Hell, only to have Laura dump responsibility on her. Figuring out how to run things turns even weirder as her hated deceased stepmother Ant appears and tries to help. Something peculiar is also going on with Betsy’s BFF, Jessica. What Betsy discovers may just rock her entire world. (BERKLEY SENSATION, Oct., 320 pp., $25.95)
