Fifth in an enchanting series, Under a Spell is a winner with witty dialogue and quick-paced adventure. It can be read as a stand-alone, but why cheat yourself and miss out on the fun of the first four? Sophie Lawson and the other characters of the Underworld Detection Agency are full of spark and live in a world you’ll want to revisit again and again. Sophie is a bit of an underdog living among the supernatural with her only “power” being that of magical immunity. The sharp, clever exchanges and hilarious situations are paired perfectly with romance and a little mystery. This is definitely a series you’ll want to follow, hoping the author never grows tired of writing about the UDA.

Sophie is a human living in a world of vampires, angels and demons. Her loyalty, spunk and magical immunity have brought her far with the Underworld Detection Agency. Her skills are put to the ultimate test when she goes undercover in one of the most dangerous and evil places ever known: high school. She may be immune to magic, but she’s not immune to the horror of mean girls or the coven of witches and their planned sacrifice of a schoolgirl. Meanwhile, Sophie’s guardian angel, Will, tries to convince her to give in to her baser instincts where he is concerned. As the end draws near, Will and Sophie must pull out all the stops to wage war against deadly magic. (KENSINGTON, Aug., 416 pp., $7.99)
