Following her failed marriage, Mariah Henry is ready to start life over again. Just as she's figuring out what that means, she receives word that her father has died. To deal with his last wishes, she returns to Henry Island, NC, and meets Gray Hollowell, who has a lease to her father's cottage.

Gray is there at the request of Edgar, Mariah's father. Prior to his death, Edgar asked Gray to investigate the death of his wife. It had originally been ruled an accident, but Edgar had reason to suspect foul play. After his boss dies, Gray feels compelled to remain on the case. His inclination only grows after he meets Mariah and wants to give her the answers her father sought.

Browning has created an interesting cast of characters, though it takes a while for the excitement to build. (Jul., 320 pp., $5.99)
