Fans of Caine's Weather Warden novels will probably enjoy this new series set in the same world. However, new readers will likely be lost -- there's minimal exposition, and aspects of the milieu are confusing, in particular the purpose of the Wardens themselves. That said, Cassiel is an interesting
protagonist, and the plot moves briskly. Her growing understanding and
sympathy for humanity is one of
the highlights of the novel.

Cassiel, a djinn who has been cast to earth in human form, is having a hard time adjusting to mortal life. Picked up by the Wardens and partnered with Earth Warden Manny Ramirez, she generally finds the work easier than dealing with other people -- until the worst happens and Cassiel finds herself, and those she has come to care about, right in the line of fire of a malevolent force that's bound and determined to destroy all it touches.
