Book editor Shaye Montgomery is fascinated by ghost towns. She visits Bodie, a town that was second to none for wickedness, badmen and the worst climate in its heyday. Shaye is strolling down Bodies now-empty streets, when she finds herself back in time, walking in the past Bodie as well as walking literally into the legendary gambler Alejandro Rio Valverdes arms. He was hanged in 1880 for murdering his female business partner.

Women have thrown themselves at Rio before but one has never fainted at his feet. Rio is intrigued by the mysterious beauty with the strange clothing, and decides to take her under his wing.

The attraction between them sizzles, but Shaye refuses to surrender; she knows that she could never survive the future if she left her heart in the past.
