Eerie and atmospheric, this is not late-night reading for the squeamish or sensitive -- and skeptics should keep clear, because a ghost figures prominently in the plot. For the rest of us, it's great fun. A spooky mystery with a hint of romance added.

Docent Sarah McKinley is on her way to making her long-held dream come true -- she's recently purchased
an old mansion and is in the process of turning it into a BandB. Then the renovation crew finds lots of old bones hidden in the walls. P.I. Caleb Anderson is working a missing-persons case and can't help wondering if what happened long ago in Sarah's house is connected to his investigation. Digging into the house's history brings Sarah and Caleb together, which proves to be a good thing indeed. Because despite the supernatural overtones of recent events, a very mortal killer at work -- and they're squarely in his or her sights. (MIRA, Oct., 368 pp., $7.99)
