Three times wed—and widowed—at age 22, Rosamund Bolton has decided it's time she lived for herself. When childhood friend Margaret Tudor, now the wife of Scotland's King James IV, asks Rosamund to visit her at court, she jumps at the chance.

Little does Rosamund know that this decision will change her life. There, she meets Patrick Leslie, Earl of Glenkirk, and falls madly in love for the first time in her life. Patrick feels the same way and they start a very passionate affair.

When King James asks Patrick to go on a secret mission to San Lorenzo to try to prevent war, Patrick agrees—but only if he can take Rosamund with him. Rosamund is ready for an adventure—and what an adventure it turns out to be!

Not only is Small's story full of romance, it's also rich in detail and history. Her descriptions of characters and scenes are so precise that I felt as if I'd been transported back in time. I always have a very hard time putting down one of her books and this one is no exception. (Oct., 371 pp., $14.00)
