The cases are eerie and hazardous, but the detectives are grimly determined in these dozen new short stories by a most imaginative group of mystery and fantasy authors. This follow-up to the 2004 Powers of Detection collection offers original criminal tales that run the gambit from supernaturally gritty to a tad offbeat.

Charlaine Harris is on hand to give Sookie Stackhouse and her roommate Amelia a sabotage case to solve in the opening tale, "Lucky." Carole Nelson Douglas places paranormal P.I. Delilah Street on the murder case of a Sam Spade simulation in "Bogieman." Ghosts need the truth in Sharon Shinn's "The House
of Seven Spirits," while a grisly "Appetite for Murder" takes Simon R. Green fans on a dark new case in the Nightside. And in "Illumination," Laura Anne Gilman helps launch a new series featuring investigative talent Bonnie Torres. (ACE, Dec., 320 pp., $14.00)
