Boeshaar writes her characters with compassion. She does a great job of writing about the Civil War when people had to be strong to survive.
Valerie Fontaine has returned to New Orleans to grieve for her mother. She needs her father to help her through this, but he turns his back on her. Their house guest, Benjamin McCabe, seems to be just as judgmental as her father. She is afraid her father is going to marry her off into a loveless marriage to James Ladden. When she gives her life to Christ, she starts looking at Benjamin in a new light. Can he be the one for her salvation? (STRANG, May, 320 pp., $10.99)
