VALENTINE'S FORTUNE (2) by Allison Leigh: Pregnant and desperate to escape her abusive fiance, Bethany Burdett seeks refuge in Red Rock and finds work as a receptionist under an assumed name. Then firefighter Darr Fortune comes to her rescue -- in more ways than one. Their attraction almost makes Bethany forget her distrust of men, but when Darr finds out about the baby, his response -- a proposal -- just doesn't sit right, even after Bethany discovers the real reason for it. The second installment of the new Fortunes miniseries deftly sets up future stories, and both Bethany and Darr are likable enough. But the plot's extremely thin, and the conflict is more of an argument about Darr's impulsive proposal.
