This may be the 14th book in the Love at Stake series, but it’s still as fresh as the first. Fans will be thrilled with Dougal Kincaid’s absorbing, entertaining story. If this is your entrée into the series, it may be rough going at the start but, luckily, the book can function as a stand-alone. Just don’t be surprised if you want to start the series from the beginning!

After being devastatingly injured in a clash with the Malcontents, Dougal Kincaid is more than ready to jump back in the thick of things. Before returning to active duty, he needs to get control of his injured hand. When he meets lovely doctor Leah, his hand develops a mind of its own and there is a burning sensation down the length of his tattoo. Leah is a trained scientist and has difficulty wrapping her analytical mind around vampires. But doubting their existence doesn’t make them any less real, and they have come for her help in solving a genetic puzzle that can save mankind. (AVON, Sep., 384 pp., $7.99)
