Assistant D.A. Sarah Mason seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when someone holds up the mini-mart where she's shopping. She's shot while attempting to save a young girl -- but the shot comes from outside the store, so who shot Sarah?

That question is paramount to P.I. Jake Hogan, who is also Sarah's best friend. Sarah and Jake met when she hired him
to hunt for her kidnapped daughter, Lexie, seven years ago. Although he couldn't find the girl, Jake and Sarah have since seen each other through tough times, and now Jake wants to take their relationship to a new level.

When Sarah gets home from the
hospital, she receives a phone call that
contains Lexie's voice, eerily calling for
her mother. Jake knows that someone
is playing with Sarah's head, but who,
and for what purpose?

Using every parent's worst nightmare
as a launching point, romantic suspense maven Robards delivers a terrifically intense chiller. One of the most interesting elements of this story is how Robards takes an already existing friendship and escalates its intensity. This is power-packed stuff! (May, 384 pp., $24.95)
