Vanity Fare is a charming winter read with likable characters. Not only does it provide a good story, it features plenty of delectable baked treats — and even includes the recipes for them. Though the novel runs long, thereby slowing down the reading process, it is worth a look.

Molly Hagan needs her life to change, stat. Her good-for-nothing soon-to-be ex-husband has lost his job, and can now no longer help support the struggling Molly and their 6-year-old son, Aidan. She gets a position writing promo ads for a new bakery opening in town — and meets a delectable British pastry chef. Will her life get the romantic (and financial) reboot it so desperately needs? Only time, and lots of finger-licking good treats, will tell. (MORROW, Dec., 416 pp., $14.99)
