A well-researched, educational and truly fun novel from history buff Hooper. Teens may be unfamiliar with, but will love, the topic: mediums, women who claimed they could contact the dead and charged an exorbitant fee to do so. The characters are a bit flat, Velvet in particular, but the plot is juicy and interesting.

Velvet has carved out a life for herself as a steam laundress. Yet she dreams of more, and she just might get it when she falls in with famous medium Madame Savoya. Naïve Velvet is about to enter a world she can’t possibly understand. (BLOOMSBURY, Nov., 336 pp., $16.99, ISBN: 9781599909127, HC, 12 & Up)
