Dermot O'Rourke is under investigation for murder by the Chicago Police. A therapist who volunteers his time at Heartland Halfway House, he may have been blackmailed by the victim, Tony Vargas, a former patient. Doctor-patient confidentiality prevents Dermot from disclosing the real details and clearing his name, but detective Stella "Star" Jacobek is determined to clear Dermot, who once saved her from a rapist. He helped convince her to regain control of her life—right before leaving their love behind. Stella's past and this murder may link them again in surprising ways. Velvet Ropes (4) is a heady delight, and readers should love Patricia Rosemoor's hero. Dialogue is excellent, but the addition of a little more narrative wouldn't have hurt.
