Telling maple-syrup makers that their trees are infested with destructive beetles is part of botanist Celie Favreau's job, and it's never easy. But it's especially difficult to tell large, taciturn farmer Jacob Trask. There's something about the man that gets to Celie, and her presence threatens more than Jacob's livelihood. Jacob's firmly rooted and Celie isn't, but even that knowledge doesn't stop the pain for either of them when she leaves. Kristin Hardy completes her excellent Holiday Hearts trilogy with Vermont Valentine (4.5), a quietly compelling, sensual story about two strong-minded yet deeply vulnerable people who are unprepared for love.
