This book is not Canton's best. It reads like a soap opera and lacks mystery and depth. While the reader will root for the characters to sort out their lives, they aren't compelling enough to provoke that "oh my God, what is going to happen next?" feeling.

Alicia, Lauren and Gabrielle have been best friends since ninth grade, when they met at boarding school. Among the three of them they've compiled five failed marriages and one widowhood, as they continue looking for their "Mr. Darcy." While they are very successful in their business endeavors -- Alicia has her own magazine, Lauren is a producer for an up-and-coming cable station and Gabrielle owns an art gallery -- they have dark spots as well.

Alicia's medical secret could put her life in danger. Lauren's soon-to-be ex-husband is trying to blackmail her. Gabrielle's mother is trying to find her a new husband with class and money. They meet once a month at each other's homes to discuss what has transpired in their lives. (GENESIS/INDIGO, Sep., 398 pp., $6.99)
