WAITING OUT THE STORM (4.5) by Ruth Logan Herne: Veterinarian Craig Macklin can’t turn away a dog with a face full of porcupine quills, even if the dog belongs to Sarah Slocum. Sarah’s older half-brother bilked Craig’s grandparents out of their savings, then killed himself, leaving behind a wife and three kids. Sarah helps care for her nieces and nephews and when they’re threatened with foster care, takes the children in. Craig, living across the road from her, soon becomes involved in her life. A wonderful addition to Herne’s North Country series with delightful human and animal characters and a hero whose honesty is refreshing.
