A dark foray into an alternate world where the monsters control society. Perhaps as the series continues, the foundation in this book will provide more opportunity for readers to see the depth of the characters, which is just hinted at, barely breaking the surface, in this debut. The story is a real page-turner though, and well written to the point of leaving me with goosebumps at the end.

Kat Redding is known as Lady Death. It’s a title that affords her a healthy respect among her enemies, and is a virtual death sentence to those who hear it. She is a vampire who hunts other vampires in order to protect humans, known as Purebloods. When the head of a vampire house attempts to merge with a cult of werewolves, Kat knows she must stop them before they merge their power to become totally uncontrollable and unstoppable. Even if it costs her what little is left of her own humanity. (KENSINGTON, Jan., 320 pp., $7.99)
