WARDS OF FAERIE
This novel, the first in a new trilogy from Terry Brooks, is filled with riveting action, heart-wrenching emotion and shocking twists, drawing the reader in immediately. The world he creates is full of danger, secretive plots and undiscovered magic. And Brooks’ tactic of introducing the world and its characters slowly increases suspense in the story while still fully developing the characters. The only disappointment is that the next book in the series will not be published for another six months, because readers will crave more when they finish Wards of Faerie.
As uncertain times rock a region known as the Four Lands, the search for a long lost form of Elven magic, the elfstones, becomes essential. Aphenglow Elessedil, an Elf and Druid, finds a diary that might help the Druids, sworn protectors of magic who are despised by many of the others in their realm, rediscover the elfstones. She shares her discovery with her fellow Druids, including leader, Khyber Elessedil, and Aphenglow’s life partner, Bombax — and the Druids decide to risk everything to find the precious elfstones. They embark on a journey into unknown lands filled with perilous terrain and dangerous creatures. Meanwhile they must dodge attacks by the Prime Minister of the Federation, who is determined to destroy magic. The journey creates new friendships and strains many lifelong relationships, irreparably damaging some. What further surprises await our heroes? (DEL REY, Aug., 384 pp., $28.00)
