Sent to investigate an archeological find in a different realm, Dr. Deryn Murray has an ulterior motive -- to protect the people.

Colonel Alejandro Vargas, who conducts security for the site and is a were-jaguar, is strongly attracted to her. Deryn is attracted to him, but she knows better than to trust him, having been betrayed before. The fact that she is there to protect him -- and that she is a slayer, hated by most supernaturals -- makes for a difficult relationship. Add to this the native wildlife that she can communicate with; spirit tomb guards that only Deryn can see and who are a constant threat; and an evil that is stalking them and wants Alejandro dead, and things get really complicated.

Though a bit confusing at times, this is a fascinating, fast-moving paranormal romance with complex characters. But at the end of the story, the lack of background information leaves you feeling you missed out on the part of the story that explains how this world functions. (Mar., 228 pp., $12.99)
