WASHED UNDER THE WAVES

Clover tries her hand at speculative fiction in the first novel of her Children of the King series. The setting and narrative tone suggest a historical tale scattered with odd references to real literary works, but by the third chapter it becomes apparent the story is set sometime in an unspecified future. While Clover’s storytelling is easy to read and her passion for the story shows, the tale reads like a Christian parable, complete with a biblical verse and a Latin glossary. Who the king is, how the island existed for over 2,000 years without outside influence and what the rest of the world is like are just some of the questions that are never answered.
Thanks to a prophesy, Tayte Basham is the ruler of Undae Island and promised as the bride for the king’s son. Arriving in the guise of a tutor sent by the distant and unknown king to prepare the islanders, Prince Geoffrey must get Tayte to accept the peace that comes from knowing the king, and work with her to prepare the people for his coming.
