The third book in Novak's trilogy is creepy and absorbing, and the characterizations are excellent. Plan to stay up very late to finish this one!

Twelve years ago, while parking, teenagers Sheridan Kohl
and Jason Wyatt were shot. The
random act took Jason's life, but Sheridan survived. Now she's a
caseworker for The Last Stand, an organization that aids victims of
crime. So when the rifle that killed Jason is found, Sheridan returns to
her hometown to look into the matter. Another attempt is made on her life -- she's badly beaten and left for dead. Fortunately, Jason's stepbrother, Cain Granger, lives nearby and saves her.

Afterward, Cain cares for Sheridan while she recovers. Taking some time off from his job with a wildlife agency, he sticks close, determined to protect Sheridan. Cain makes the move partly because their long-standing attraction has flared again and also because he wants to clear his name. Nearly everyone, his father included, thinks he murdered Jason.
