The quiet village of Osterley is shocked when kindly Father James is brutally killed. The police believe the priest surprised a burglar but to appease the Bishop, Scotland Yard sends Inspector Ian Rutledge, a shell-shocked WWI vet, to investigate.

Rutledge, tormented by the spirit of a man he was forced to execute in the Great War, does a painstaking job of researching the murder. Although an arrest has been made, he is fairly sure the solution is not the correct one. In fact, another murder occurs, giving credence to his theory. As Rutledge pushes on, he uncovers secrets from the past that reveal that more than one person wished harm to the priest.

At once poignantly moving and suspenseful, WATCHERS OF TIME takes the reader back to the era immediately following WWI and brings those times to life. This is a series that only grows stronger as it goes along. (Nov., 339 pp., $24.95)
