Harris continues her Sebastian St. Cyr series with this fine Regency-era mystery. The characters are intriguing; everyone has scandal and mystery in their backgrounds. With an intricate plot and fascinating details concerning the Napoleonic Wars, the pages will keep turning.

A despicable gem dealer and loan shark has been murdered and the man standing over the body is the new husband of Sebastian’s former lover, Kat. To help her, Sebastian starts his own investigation and finds that nearly everyone in London wanted the man dead. Further clues point to occult involvement, foreign agents and the French crown jewels. The dead man was arranging the sale of a large blue diamond believed to have been stolen during the French Revolution. Napoleon is desperate to have the diamond and dispatches ruthless men to retrieve it. (OBSIDIAN, Mar., 368 pp., $24.95)
