Clare Cosi gets an offer from her former employer and mother-in-law, Madame Dreyfus Allegro Dubois, to return as manager of her Greenwich Village coffeehouse, the Village Blend. The five-year deal includes a duplex apartment above the shop and a guarantee that Matt Allegro, the coffee buyer and Clare's ex-husband, will only bother her one week a month.

About to begin her new life, Clare finds the assistant manager, Anabelle, barely alive in the basement and an "intruder" in her duplex. Apparently when Madame said Matt would only bother her one week a month, she didn't mention he'd be living with her during that time.

The police think Anabelle's death was an accident, but Clare sets out to prove foul play was involved. While gorgeous NYPD homicide detective, Lieutenant Quinn is around to offer advice, her ex tries to charm his way back into her life.

The first book in Coyle's new series is a definite winner! The mystery is first rate, and the characters leap from the page and are compelling, vivid and endearing. The aroma of this story made this non-coffee-drinker want to visit the nearest coffee bar. (Sep., 288 pp., $5.99)
